Leslie Hayashi was born on August 3, 1954, in Tokyo, Japan. She is a daughter of Warren Shizuo Hayashi and Gerde Ilse (Wilhelm) Smejkal.
Leslie Hayashi studied at Stanford University where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1976. She also studied at Georgetown University and received a Juris Doctor degree in 1979.
Leslie Hayashi started her career as an instructor in legal topics at Arlington Career Center in 1978. She also was a staff attorney in the Educational Programs Department. In 1980, she became a partner and associate at Rush Moore LLP. She held this post from 1980 to 1988. Hayashi worked as an executive director at Hawaii Lawyers Care in Honolulu from 1988 to 1989. In 1989, she took up a post of per diem judge at First circuit court in Honolulu. Later she became a district court judge. Hayashi was a member of the committee on equality and access to the courts at Hawaii Supreme Court from 1990 to 2004. From 1995 to 2015 she taught at the National Judicial College training judges in the areas of decision making, diversity, and handling self-represented litigants. In 2015, she took up a post of a Hearings Officer at Civil Rights Commission in Hawaii.
Leslie Hayashi wrote her first book, Fables from the Garden, in 1998. She has published 9 books. One of her last books is Celebrating Holidays in Hawaii that was published in 2010. She is currently the Assistant Regional Advisor for the Hawaii chapter of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI). Hayashi also creates pictures. She works in watercolors and acrylics and prefers creating abstract paintings. Hayashi took part in various art exhibits. Her artwork has been chosen for the cover of the Hawaii Bar Journal and the Hawaii Bar Directory.

2007Leslie Ann Hayashi is a member of the American Bar Association, Illinois State Bar Association, American Arbitration Association, and Hawaii State Bar Association. She also was a member of the executive committee of the Hawaii State Trial Judges' Association from 1993 to 1997. Hayashi was Vice President of Hawaii Women Lawyers in 1985 and President in 1986.
Leslie Hayashi married Alan Van Etten on May 10, 1986. The marriage produced two children.
