Lester David was born on October 26, 1914, in New York, United States.
David joined the staff of the Brooklyn Eagle as a copy editor, became a reporter, then assistant city editor in the mid-1930s and remained in the newspaper’s employ until 1949.
During that time he served in the U.S. Army during World War II and became managing editor of the Paris edition of Stars and Stripes.
After his stint with the Eagle, David turned to freelance writing. He penned several books about the Kennedy family, including Ted Kennedy: Triumphs and Tragedies, Ethel: The Story of Mrs. Robert F. Kennedy, Joan: The Reluctant Kennedy, and Jackie and Ari: The Inside Story (with Jhan Robbins). He also wrote biographies of other political figures: The Lonely Lady of San Clemente: The Story of Pat Nixon and Ike and Mamie: The Story of the General and His Lady (with his wife, Irene David). David wrote volumes on celebrities as well, including Richard and Elizabeth (with Robbins) and The Shirley Temple Story (with David).
