During the period from 1961 till 1967, Lester held the post of a Professor of Education and Counseling at Columbia University. From 1984 until his death in 2000, he held the post of a Training and Supervising Analyst at the New York Psychoanalytic Institute (now known as the New York Psychoanalytic Society & Institute), where, in 1998, he founded a program of study for Psychodynamic Psychotherapy. The program was intended for people, who are already mental health professionals.
In addition, Lester spent several years as a Public School Psychologist and Counselor in New York state. He also worked at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Montefiore Medical Center.
Besides, Schwartz co-wrote the book "Career Finder: Pathways to over Fifteen Hundred Entry-Level Jobs" with Irv Brecher in 1983.
