He earned a Bachelor of Arts in sociology from Yeshiva College in 1967, followed by a Master of Social Work from the same institution in 1969.
Kaufman began his professional career in 1969 as a caseworker at Jewish Community Services of Long Island in Rego Park, New York, where he worked until 1971. He then joined Ohel Children’s Home and Family Services in Brooklyn as director of professional services from 1971 to 1974.
In 1974, he was appointed executive director of Ohel Children’s Home and Family Services, a position he has held since, overseeing the expansion of its programs and services. In addition to his executive role, he served on the board of directors of the New York State Council of Voluntary Family and Child Care and was involved with the Council of Mental Retardation of New York City as treasurer. He also served as chairman of the board of directors of the Herbert G. Birsch School for Special Children and as past chairman of the board of the Health Systems Agency of New York City District I.
He has been a member of the Academy of Certified Social Workers and the National Association of Social Workers. He was also affiliated with the Association of Orthodox Jewish Scientists of America, where he served as past president and past chairman of the board.
