CHUGAYEV, Lev was born on October 17, 1873 in Moscow.
1895 graduate Moscow University.
Aft' r graduate head Department of Chemistry, Bacteriological Institute, Moscow Un.v. 1904-1908 professor of chemistry, Moscow Higher Technical College.
1908-1922 professor of organic chemistry, Saint St. Petersburg University. 1909-1922 professor of organic chemistry, Saint St. Petersburg Technol Institute. From 1918 founder-director
Institute for the Study of Platinum and Other Precious Metals, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Sciences. Did first research on biochemistry and bacteriology. 1900 discovered sensitive luminescent reaction, making it possible to distinguish between the common coliform bacterium and the typhoid bacillus.
Made major contribution to study of terpenes and camphors. 1899 developed new "xanthogcnic" method of synthesizing hydrocarbons which consists in obtaining the ethyl xanthate of the corresponding spirit and then separating the ethyl by heating. 1911 discovered new type of anomalous rotary dispersion caused by the presence in an organic compound molecule of two assymetric centers rotating in different directions and having different dispersion coefficients.
Made important contribution to chemistry of complex compounds. 1906 established that the most stable complex compounds contain fiveor six-membered internal rings (Chugayev’s ring rule). 1905 discovered new sensitive reaction of nickel with dimethylglyoxime (Chugayev’s reagent).
1918 discovered similar reaction of osmium with thiourea. Gave impetus to new trend in analytic chemistry based on use of organic reagents. 1920 in the course of research on complex compounds of platinum group achieved first synthesis of hypothesized pentammine compounds of quadrivalent platinum | Pt(NH3)5C 1 ]X3 (Chugayev salts).
1915 discovered conversion of complex amino-compounds into correspondent amido-compounds. Established Soviet school of inorganic chemists specializing in complex compounds.

Marxism–Leninism as the only truth could not, by its very nature, become outdated.
