GURVICH, Lev was born in 1871.
1892 graduate Kiev University.
From 1899 worked in sugar industry. 1904-1909 chemist, Ccntr Oil Laboratory, Baku Nobel Plants. From 1909 head, oil laboratory in Saint St. Petersburg.
1920 founder and head, Centr Chemical Laboratory, Azer Oil Trust in Baku. From 1920 professor, Azer University and Azer Polytech Institute. From 1924 head Oil Laboratory, Moscow Institute of Heat Engineer.
Collated and analysed vast experimental material on oil chemistry and physical chemistry obtained in Russia and abroad. 1911-1912 studying the phenomenon of adsorbtion, advanced hypothesis on physic-chemical attraction, intermediate between chemical bonding and molecular attraction. On the basis of these ideas explained the formation of floridinc (bleaching earth) and metal suspension in liquids and the formation of colloidal solutions and also adsorbtion and desorbtion processes.
His works on adsorbtion helped develop methods of oil refining. His book Nauchnyye osnovy pererabotki nefti (Scientific Principles of Oil Refining) (1913) is among the classic works on oil refining and is still largely valid. His research on adsorbtion and catalysis led him to a hypothesis on heterogeneous catalysis (1916).
1908, while studying the steam refining of oil, found the explanation for this process. His research on surface tension of an oil product/aqueous solution face/ helped ascertain the reason for the formation and destruction of emulsions, especially during the refining of oil products in alkaline solutions.

Marxism–Leninism as the only truth could not, by its very nature, become outdated.
