Graduated in 1921 from the Red Army Military School, then in 1924 from the Red Army Academy.
One of the Soviet Union’s top spies. In 1916, received a grant from some rich Jewish patrons of the arts and went to Geneva to study. In 1918, joined L. Trotsky.
In 1929, graduated from the Zhukovskii Air Force Academy. Entered the intelligence service. A multilingual and very efficient agent.
Worked mainly abroad on dangerous assignments, liquidating enemies of the Soviet government. Worked at Narkomindel (Narkomat of Foreign Affairs) under Chicherin. Also on assignments all over Europe kidnapping foreigners and anti-communist former Soviet citizens living abroad.
Dealer in stolen diamonds, pictures, tapestries and cocaine. Arrested in Vienna but escaped prosecution. NKVD colonel, 1935. During World War II, taken prisoner by the
Germans.
POW under the name of Colonel Starostin in the German concentration camps Mauthausen, Melk and Ebensee. A film about his exploits was made in the 1960s.
