Graduate Kerch High-School. From 1870 studied at Med Faculty, Moscow University.
Did revol propaganda among Moscow workers. 1873 arrested and interned for four years in Peter and Paul Fortress. Late 1878 joined “Land and Liberty” Party and helped edit its organ.
From 1879 member, Executive Committee, “People’s Will” Party. 1883, after suppression of “People’s Will” Party, emigrated. Ed, periodical “Vestnik Narodnoy voli”.
1888 renounced his former convictions and printed in Paris a pamphlet entitled Pochemu ya perestal byt’ revolyutsionerom (Why I Have Ceasend to Be a Revolutionary). 1889, after writing a letter to the tsar, granted permission to return to Russia. Became leading monarchist.
Contributed to periodicals “Moskovskiye vedomosti”, “Novoye vremya” and “Russkoye obozreniyc”. 1917 settled in Zagorsk and abandoned politics.
