Gaylord received his country"s highest award for bravery during combat, the Medal of Honor. Gaylord"s medal was won for his actions during the Battle of Fort Stedman in St. Petersburg, Virginia on March 25, 1865. The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Sergeant Levi B. Gaylord, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 25 March 1865, while serving with Company A, 29th Massachusetts Infantry, in action at Fort Stedman, Virginia.
