English poetry begins with Anglo-Saxon poetry such as the hymn on the creation, which Bede attributes to Cædmon (658–680AD). William Shakespeare was the stand out poet of the Elizabethan period, while Milton was considered the greatest poet of Jacobean and Caroline pe5riod (1603-1670). The Romantic movement was very big, proiducing such greats as William Blake, William Wordsworth, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Percy Bysshe Shelley, Lord Byron, and John Keats.

Lewis Morris was born on January 23, 1833, in Carmarthen, Wales. He was the son of Lewis Morris, a solicitor, and Sophia (Hughes) Morris.
In 1856, Morris received a Bachelor of Arts from Jesus College in Oxford, and a Master of Arts in 1858.
In 1871 Morris anonymously commenced his literary career with Songs of Two Worlds, and he followed this work with two more anonymous publications bearing the same title. The poems in the three volumes of Songs of Two Worlds are largely derivative of Lord Tennyson’s verse, which Morris immensely enjoyed and appreciated. But despite their derivative nature, the various Songs of Two Worlds found favor with Victorian readers.
In the mid-1870s Morris produced the three-volume Epic of Hades, which Conover described as Morris’s “best-known and most rousing poem.” In this verse epic, the poet roams from Hades to Mount Olympus and makes the acquaintance of various characters from Greek mythology. The Epic of Hades enjoyed substantial commercial success with the Victorian book-buying public, and it won praise for both its scholasticism and its compelling nature.
Morris’s ensuing publications failed to match the critical and commercial success of The Epic of Hades, but they managed to maintain his presence as a prominent poet. Conover regarded the collections Ode of Life and Songs Unsung as “uninspired lyrics,” and she dismissed the biographical monologues of A Vision of Saints as “weakly Miltonic.”
While Lewis was producing these and other volumes, Morris held various political and social-service positions. Although he failed in his various bids for a seat in Parliament, he succeeded in other capacities. He served on a government committee to appraise Welsh education, and he helped establish the University of Wales in 1893. In addition, he held a position on the Queen’s Privy Council in 1895. He was knighted in 1893. Morris published his last volume, The New Rambler: From Desk to Platform, in 1905. This series of essays on subjects ranging from poetry to female education, and from art to science, was lauded by a Dial reviewer as “well worth reading.”

1886In the decades since his death in 1907, Morris has become an increasingly obscure literary figure. His work, when it is recalled, is compared unfavorably to that of Lord Tennyson, whose verse exerted a substantial influence on Morris’s own poetry.
Quotes from others about the person
“The public accepted Morris’s poetry as a welcome relief from the exotic mood and elaborate phrasing of much late-nineteenth-century verse.” - Cheryl S. Conover
In 1868, Morris married Florence Pollard. They had three children.
