256 pp. 7½x10; 23,000 entry Every Name Index; 1988 (1822). Boston Taxpayers contains the entire 1821 tax list for both Boston and South Boston, and thus for 99% of Suffolk County, Mass. Originally published in 1822 and never before reprinted, the 1822 book is found today in only a few rare-book collections. This reprint also includes a new 23,000 entry Every-Name Index as well as an Introduction with background information and an explanation of tax-due calculations. A wealth of detail is included, touching on every family in Boston as well as on partnerships, corporations, heirs, and estates. Directly or through the heirs and others who made Boston famous, as well as the names, addresses and possessions of the multitude of merchants, artisans and ordinary citizens who made the city work. The book covers: TAXPAYERS - Over 8,000 taxpayers' names in all, together with the assessment figures for both personal and real estate, including all tax abatements granted. TENANTS - Several thousand tenants are given by name, together with their addresses, the names of their landlords and the amount of personal and real estate on which the tenants were taxed. PROPERTY OWNERS - All 6,000 property owners are named. By using the index you can reconstruct complete lists of all property owned by each one. POLL TAXES - The 10,000 poll taxes due are listed, under the taxpayer's name. TAXES DUE - These figures cover all of the taxes mentioned above, including abatements, and indicate whether paid by the tenant or the property owner. ADDRESSES - Addresses given for everyone include street name and ward. This is an invaluable aid to early 19th century research in Boston, a period which is surprisingly difficult to research. Most of the details given here are unobtainable elsewhere, and even the real estate ownership records could be reconstructed only through painstaking and extensive research. As every person named in this book was born in the mid to late 1700s, while the estates were generally for persons born early in the 1700s, these data span almost all of Boston's 18th century growth. A necessary book for any research library with a Boston section.
