Means, Lewis M. was born on July 15, 1890 in Camden County, Missouri, United States. Son of Andrew C. and Rebecca Ann (Holder) Means.


Educated Central College, Fayette, Missouri.


Assistant in organization of Missouri State Highway Patrol, 1931, served as troop commander and Executive officer with rank of major until 1937. Appointed adjutant general Missouri National Guard, 1937-1941. Resigned for active duty World World War World War II Commissioned Second lieutenant Infantry, 1917, First lieutenant, 1918.

Served with 89th and 18th Divisions. Commissioned captain, O.R.C., Infantry, 1922, major, 1924. Brigadier general, A.G.D. 1937, brigadier general of the line, 1938.

Federal service 1940 as commanding general 70th Infantry Brigade, 35th Infantry Division. Assigned to organize anti-sabotage activities in N. California section under 7th Army Corps, 1941. Organized, commander Northern Defense Area, 1942.

Provost marshall at Presidio at San Francisco and Fort Douglas, Utah until 1944. Director security United Nations conference, San Francisco, 1945, also member United States secretariat. May 26, 1946. Decorations: World Wars I and II medals, American Theatre, Pre-Pearl Harbor, Asiatic Theatre, Army Commendation Ribbon, Legion of Merit.
