Graduated from the Petersburg Theatre School, 1909. Pupil of Mikhail Fokin.
Joined the Mariinskii Theatre in 1909. In 1910, appeared with Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes. Became a prima ballerina and a dramatic actress.
With Diaghilev, performed mostly in the productions of her tutor, Fokin (L'Oiseau de Feu). With the Ballets Russes toured the USA, Italy and Latin America, 1911-1915. Performed with M. Mordkin, L. Miasin, and her brother, F. Lopukhov.
In 1916, married Diaghilev’s businessmanager, Randolfo Barocchi. Left him 3 years later. Returned to Diaghilev in 1921.
Lived in Bloomsbury. Met Maynard Keynes in 1926, and married him shortly afterwards. After 1927, appeared from time to time with British ballet companies, and danced with L. Miasin in F. Ashton’s productions. After her husband’s death in 1946, lived as a virtual recluse on their Sussex estate until her death.
