Educated in St. Petersburg and at Oxford University.
Married Prince Illarion Vasil’chikov, 1909. Founded and ran a hospital train at the front throughout World War I. Emigrated, 1919. Lived in France, Germany and Lithuania.
Whilst in France, set up a highly successful amateur theatre company which she managed, and in which she also performed. In June 1940, escaped from Soviet-occupied Lithuania to Italy. In 1941, moved to Germany, where, following Hitler’s invasion of the USSR, she established, despite Hitler’s personal opposition, a worldwide aid organization to provide food and clothing to starving Soviet POWs in the German camps.
