Most of you will be working with students who require remediation, students who have failed to master the reading process, but who have probably learned little bits and pieces that don't come together yet to open the door to reading. Each of these persons -- child or adult -- needs an individualized approach: the spark of love of learning must be cultivated in each one, and each one must be assisted in learning what s/he lacks, while the bits and pieces that they already know must be acknowledged. Each one must be kept interested in the reading matter. There should be no factory belt line for these learners. The author addresses to approaches: Whole Language and Teaching of Skills, arguing that they are not mutually exclusive. Chapters include: Before You Begin, Working with Students For Whom English is a Second Language, How to Teach, Additional Aids, and Helpful Resources. How to Teach covers: Prepare a Reading Inventory, Basic Reading Skills, Common Sight Words, Methodologies, Third Grade Level or Lower, Fourth to Eighth Grade Levels, and Ninth Grade Level or Better. 224 Pages.
