Lin Fengmian was born on November 22, 1900 in Meixian, Guangdong, China.
When Lin was a child, he started to learn traditional Chinese painting techniques. After graduating from high school, Fengmian moved to France, where he studied European painting at the Dijon Art College and the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris.
In 1925 Lin returned to Beijing, where he had his first solo exhibition a year later. Also, in 1926 Fengmian was appointed a president of the Central Academy of Fine Arts. In 1928, Lin founded the National Academy of Art (nowadays the China Academy of Art) in Hangzhou and became its first principal.
In 1966 the artist was targeted by the Cultural Revolution. Fearing prosecution, Lin destroyed many of his experimental works but was nonetheless imprisoned for four years.
After moving to Hong Kong in 1977, he continued to paint and lived there until his death.
During his lifetime, the painter also taught some of the most renowned painters in 20th-century China, including Zhao Wuji, Li Keran, Wu Guanzhong and Xi Dejin.

Quotations: "I think what people are pursuing and expressing in art is the harmony between idealism and realism, which is also a harmony between life and the universe."
