Linda King Newell was born on January 16, 1941, in Richfield, Utah, United States, and raised in the community of Fillmore. She is the daughter of Foisy Earl and Pearl (Davies) King.
Newell attended Southern Utah State University, from which she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in art and speech education. She also attended additional studies at the University of New Hampshire, and private instruction in art and creative writing.
Newell started her career as a research assistant of the department of psychology at Duke University in 1963. Next year she became a special education teacher at Pickens Junior High School, where she worked till 1965.
In 1970, after postgraduation from the University of New Hampshire, Newell started working as an arts instructor in Adult Education Program of The World Young Women's Christian Association. She held that position for 3 years, and then, she went freelance. Since 1982, she also worked with her husband as a co-editor for Dialogue: A Journal of Mormon Thought.
During her career Newell was also a contributor of articles and book reviews to periodicals, including Ensign, Journal of Mormon History, Brigham Young University Studies, Utah Historical Quarterly, Sunstone Magazine and John Whitmer Historical Association Journal.
Now she works as a freelance writer and editor, living in Salt Lake City.

Newel is a member of the Utah State Historical Society, Utah Women’s Historical Association, Association for Mormon Letters (board member), Mormon History Association, John Whitmer Historical Association, Western American History Association, Author’s Guild and Authors League of America.
Newell married L. Jackson Newell on June 15, 1963. The couple has 4 children: Christine Louise, Jennifer Ellen, Eric Jackson and Heather Ann.
