Quotations: "Place and landscape, both new and familiar, inspire me. When I lived in New York City, I wrote stories set in California, and when I returned to California, I wrote about Manhattan. I love visiting new places, especially as a visiting writer at residencies, when I have enough time to steep myself in the landscape. Then i'II take in the slant of light outside the window, or the way the clouds pile up on a certain afternoon; I'll notice the chicory in bloom in the early morning, and the clouds of no-see-ums drifting over the lawn. And then I'll take it all home with me, where one of those details will pop up months later in a story. The act of observing - the chicory, the light, the bugs - will remind me of why I write, because I'll find myself reaching for a pen and paper, just to get it down."
