Lionel was the son and heir of Lionel Tallemache (1545 – 11 December 1575) and his wife, Susanna, daughter of Sir Ambrose Jermyn of Rushbrooke, Suffolk.

He was baptised 10 December 1562 at Helmingham. He served as High Sheriff of Suffolk 1592-1593, 1608-1609 and 1616-1617, was created a Baronet, of Helmingham Hall in the County of Suffolk in the Baronetage of England, on 22 May 1611 and subsequently knighted at Whitehall on 24 May 1612.
