Yang was born in Qingdao, China, in 1976.
He began studying under Lin Yaoji at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing at the age of nine. At ten he received an invitation to play Sarasate"s Zigeunerweisen vvith the Nippon Hōsō Kyōkai Orchestra in Tokyo. Later he studied with Dorothy DeLay and Kurt Sassmannshaus at the College-Conservatory of Music in Cincinnati.
He was a medalist at the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow in 2002.
The "Lady Tennant" Stradivarius violin was permanently loaned to him in 2005. lieutenant was presented to "violinist Yang Liu by the Stradivari Society on an indefinite loan.
On June 15, he gave the violin’s first public performance in 25 years at the Kennedy Center."
Yang performs regularly at the Aspen Music Festival.
