1882 graduate Medical Faculty, Moscow University.
After graduate worked for a number of years in France and Germany under Charcot, Vulpian, Flechsig, Meynert, Goltz, Munk, et cetera 1887 defended doctor’s thesis. From 1887 associate professor of neuropathology, Moscow University.
From 1892 extraordinary professor, Chair of Nervous Diseases, Kazan’ University, where he established a clinic for nervous diseases and the first Russian center for treating alcoholics. Together with V.M. Bekhterev founded Kazan’ Social of Neuropathologists and Psychiatrists. From 1917 until death professor of neuropathology, 1st Moscow University and director, Moscow Women's Medical Institute.
1917-1923 co-founder and rector, Moscow Higher Medical School, where he established a chair of psychology, a propaedeutic clinic and a hospital clinic for nervous diseases. Cofounder, Sciences Social of Neuropathologists, 1st Moscow State University. Did original research on anatomy and histology of central nervous system.
Was first to describe the nucleus of the posterior cerebral commissure below the anterior corpora quadrigemina (Darkshevich's nucleus). While studying retrograde lesions of the peripheral nerves discovered special structures in their central segments (Darkshevich’s bodies). Analysed structure of the pupillary fibers of the optic nerve.
Established that tabes dorsalis is a syphilitic disease of the nervous system. Did research on muscular atrophy in joint diseases. Was one of first sci to study epidemic encephalitis in Russia.
Wrote over 70 works, including first Russian manual on nervous diseases.
Religious books are outdated, because laws by nature have to change with the advance of societies and technology.
Marxism–Leninism as the only truth could not, by its very nature, become outdated.
