Pastor Unitarian churches, Billerica, Massachusetts, Detroit and Philadelphia, 1860-1864, Charlestown, New Hampshire (U.S.), 1864-1868. Established trout breeding station at Charlestown, New Hampshire (U.S.), 1866 (2d attempt at practical fish culture in the United States). Appointed deputy United States fish commissioner, 1872.
Established salmon hatching stations for United States Government on McCloud River, California, 1872 and 1879, and on Columbia River, for cannerymen, 1877.
In early 70s transported car load of live Atlantic fish and fish eggs across continent and deposited same in Pacific Ocean, this being first successful attempt of the kind ever made. Accompanied Government expedition to Alaska to investigate salmon fisheries, as a result of which Afognac Island was designated as a reservation for salmon culture by President Harrison.
