Served South Africa, 1899 - 1902 (despatches twice, Queen's medal 5 clasps, King’s medal 2 clasps). Decor ated for bravery in trying to save guns at Blood River Poort. Victoria Cross 1901; Companion of the Distinguished Service Order 1900.
