He attended Phillips Exeter Academy.
During World World War II he served as an ambulance driver with the American Field Service. He graduated Bachelor of Arts from Princeton University in 1948. Afterwards he engaged in dairy farming.
He was Chairman of the Committee on Agriculture.
Later he moved to Kihei, Maui, Hawaii, and engaged in agricultural pursuits there.
He was a member of the New York State Assembly from 1971 to 1982, sitting in the 179th, 180th, 181st, 182nd, 183rd and 184th New York State Legislatures. He was a member of the New York State Senate from 1983 to 1986, sitting in the 185th and 186th New York State Legislatures.
