Background
Ogilvie, Lloyd John was born on September 2, 1930 in Kenosha, Wisconsin, United States. Son of Vard Spencer and Katherine (Jacobson) Ogilvie.
(These two letters (epistles) were written by the Apostle ...)
These two letters (epistles) were written by the Apostle Paul to the infant church at Thessalonica. Dr. Ogilvie has chosen eleven "jugular vein" verses-one for each chapter of 1 and 2 Thessalonians- that unlock the meaning of Paul's thoughts on authentic living. The basis for such authenticity for Christ-followers is a "..rebirth of intimacy with Christ that has its indisputable origin in His initiative invasion of our lives. The newfound excitement about the Lord's power is consistent with the Biblical promises. What the Lord did so long ago, He is doing now. And it's congruent with reality." Dr. Ogilvie concludes that is why a study of "the infant church there is so crucial. We are called back to essentials, Like those new Christians. we need to be assured and affirmed in the triumphant turnaround Christ has accomplished In our lives." Dr. Lloyd John Ogilvie, 1930 - Dr. Ogilvie was born September 2, 1930 in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Some of his numerous degrees include graduating from Lake Forest College with a Doctor of Divinity and Bachelor of Arts degree; Garrett Theological Seminary with a Master of Theology degree; Moravian College and Seminary and Dickson College with a Doctor of Humanities degree; and Eastern College, George Fox University and Pepperdine University with a Doctor of Law degree. Dr. Ogilvie was a student Pastor at the Gurnee Community Church in Gurnee, Illinois and Pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Bethlehem, PA from 1962-1972 and First Presbyterian Church in Hollywood, CA from 1972-1995. He was elected Chaplain of the U.S. Senate on January 24, 1995. He was nominated by then Majority Leader Robert Dole. As Chaplain, he opens the Senate each day in prayer, provides spiritual care and counseling for the Senators, their families and staff, which totals more than six thousand people, and leads special Bible study groups, discussion sessions and prayer meetings.

(In this study of the Gospel of Mark, Dr. Ogilvie presents...)
In this study of the Gospel of Mark, Dr. Ogilvie presents principles of abundant living in Jesus Christ. It was researched and written on the campus of the University of Edinburgh where he did his graduate work years ago. The essential thread of the book can be found on page 34 when he writes "the pervading purpose of our lives is to become involved in creative relationships to mediate grace to others." In the next sentence he adds, "Communication of hope to individuals is the calling given to every Christian." From there he goes on to discuss the teachings of Jesus and the incidents recorded in the book of Mark. In talking about faith, he notes "When we dare to pray for his vision and attempt it by his power, that's when the adventure begins" (p. 109). On leadership, he observes, "Every leader must learn how to implement his vision without threats of force, authoritarianism, or loss of livelihood" (p. 129). A segment of the book addresses the necessity of rest. Ogilvie says it is vital to productivity. He talks about the practical application these principles have had in the work of his church members in Los Angeles, California. Meeting with other believers is not meant to be a ritual, religious exercise. On the contrary, he says "The fellowship of God's people is meant to be therapeutic" (p. 204). This is a positive book about a "life without limits."

I believe that discouraged churchmen, religious people who have not found a liberating faith, and those who have by-passed the church in a quest for an exciting, adventuresome life, can come alive to the serendipity of life as Christ meant it to be. The purpose of this book is to expose this quality of life as Christ described it in the Sermon on the Mount and as it is being lived by secular saints today. Each dimension of the message from the mount is illustrated with actual stories of people and the experience of a congregation which tried to live it out with faithfulness and obedience in an industrial and academic community, struggling with all the problems and potentials of the last third of the twentieth-century.

(Ogilvie believes that greatness can be attained only by f...)
Ogilvie believes that greatness can be attained only by falling into it--by the grace of God. No matter what aspect of God's character is described, and no matter what need is expressed, all things are received only by His grace. In this personal, practical book, Oglivie explains how, through reading, studying, and praying the Psalms, we can "fall into the arms of the greatness of God." Ogilvie has chosen nineteen psalms he believes most clearly show the nature of God and speak directly to the personal needs of most people. He shows how the Psalms speak for us in a magnificent language of praise and lead us into deeper fellowship with the Lord. Through the discussions, Ogilvie reveals the importance of the Book of Psalms in praying and how it can provide comfort, encouragement, strength, and joy in daily living. As Ogilvie says of the Psalms, "there is no human emotion or spiritual condition which is left unexpressed. WE are gripped with a 'That's how I feel,' or 'How did he (the psalmist) know what I've been through?" By praying through the Psalms, by understanding and embracing their messages, personal needs can be met because "each time a psalm is read...it yields fresh insight into our own concerns and the God who alone can meet our needs." In a clear, easy-to-read style, Ogilvie presents a brief explanation of the title, text, and basic development of the messages of the psalms he has selected. An in-depth commentary on the essence of each psalm enables the reader to gain a clearer understanding of the psalm and its message. The Psalms "speak to our condition...," says Ogilvie. Some subjects addressed are: **The Secret of Lasting Joy; **Living at Full Potential; **When God Seems Absent; **Triumph in Troubles; **Confusing Comparisons; and **Eternal Security.
