Background
Falk, Lloyd Leopold was born on November 6, 1919 in Ocean Grove, New Jersey, United States. Son of Leroy and Della (Blum) Falk. He earned a BS in Chemistry from Rutgers University after graduating from Montclair High School. He entered graduate school, but his schooling was interrupted by WWII in 1942. He served as a meteorologist under Eisenhower and helped to coordinate D-Day. During the war, he corresponded with his childhood friend, Eleanor, by letter. They would later marry after the war. He returned to school after the war and graduated with a doctorate (Ph.D.) in environmental science in 1949. Lloyd and Eleanor moved to Wilmington, Delaware, where Lloyd worked for the DuPont Company to solve water pollution issues throughout the US. Throughout his 32 years in this position, he testified before Congress on water pollution control and was present at President Lyndon B. Johnson's signing of the Clean Water Act in 1965. He was a founder, president, and member of the Delmarva Ornithological Society, and was an avid bird watcher for his whole life. His favourites were the Blue-Footed Boobys he saw in the Galapagos Islands. He also enjoyed painting, and studied for 30 years under Ed Loper. Many of his paintings won awards and were displayed in the Delaware Museum of Art. Lloyd and Eleanor were active for 35 years in Wilmington's Academy of Lifelong Learning, where Lloyd taught and conducted the recorder ensembles. Lloyd and Eleanor came down with COVID-19 in 2020, and unfortunately, Eleanor passed in April of 2020 from a related stroke. Lloyd pulled through, and was discharged from the hospital after three months of intense rehabilitation at 100 years old. He passed of sudden illness on March 8, 2021, at the age of 101.
