Studied law under General Stephen A. Hurlbut, Belvidere, Illinois, and Indiana Asbury U. Admitted to bar, 1858.
Entered army as captain 8th Illinois Cavalry, Army of the Potomac. Organized 140th Illinois Infantry and was colonel. Served in 12 battles and 40 or more skirmishes, and was twice wounded.
In law practice in Chicago, since 1865.
