Background

Whitney, Loren Harper was born on September 12, 1834 in Berlin, Ohio, United States. Son of James W. and Betsey (Harper) Whitney.

Education

Left home at 16 and executed contract for a levee in Mississippi. Crossed plains to California, 1852. and engaged in gold mining. Attended Mount Morris (Illinois) College, 1856.

Studied law under General Stephen A. Hurlbut, Belvidere, Illinois, and Indiana Asbury U. Admitted to bar, 1858.

Career

Entered army as captain 8th Illinois Cavalry, Army of the Potomac. Organized 140th Illinois Infantry and was colonel. Served in 12 battles and 40 or more skirmishes, and was twice wounded.
