Career
Teacher, Latin and mathematics Central College, Columbus, Ohio, admitted to Ohio bar, 1846. Formed partnership with Lieutenant Governor J. E. Holmes in Wisconsin, circa 1848. Arrived in California, 1850.
Moved to San Francisco, 1853. Became city attorney San Francisco, 1854. Appointed judge district court 12th Judicial district California, 1862.
Elected to California Supreme Court, 1863, chief justice, 1868-1870. United States circuit judge for 9th circuit, 1870, presiding judge Court of Appeals for 9th circuit, 1891. 1st a Whig, later member American Party, a Republican most of his life.
