"Stand tall, be proud, hold your head high, and remember who you are." These were the words spoken by Sophie's mother moments before she died as she sent her daughter off to America in search of a future. With her mother not yet cold in the ground, Sophie looked to the future as she stepped onto the Gallant Lady unaware of the struggle before her. Towering above her, Samuel smiled as he watched her cross the deck. This trip showed promise. In the coming months her mother's words would return to her, but not as much as the words spoken by Elliot: "Only you can determine your future. The world out there can make or break you." These words were spoken just moments after he pulled her from beneath a table in the galley. He had entered his galley to find her barely clothed, a frightened young girl with the smell of lust and the look of terror in her eyes. Sheltered by a loving mother and father, she was forced to grow up quickly as Captain Samuel Fenner forced her to his bed. There he threatened to destroy her pride and dignity while her body betrayed her as it responded to his touch. Night after night she would slip from his bed to find comfort in the stars overhead as she allowed her mind and soul to be taken away. Later she would climb deep into the bowels of the ship where she would sleep, away from the clutches of Samuel. Ahead of her lay three months at sea, and beyond that, America.
