Background

那須與 was born around 1185, Shimotsuke Province (Tochigi Prefecture), Japan.

Career

When Yoi'itomo attacked the Tairas at Yashima in Sanuki Province (Kagawa Prefecture) the Tairas challenged Minamoto forces to shoot down a fan fastened to the top of a pole erected on a small barge on the sea. The boat was rocking but with perfect timing 'ioichi, the noted archer, shot down the fan with a single arrow, and was acclaimed by both Minamoto and Taira forces. For the exploit, Yoichi was rewarded with five manor in Tamba, Shina-no and other provinces. The incident is celebrated through tnwa songs, paintings and stories.
