Louis Baldwin was born on February 14, 1919.
Louis received a Bachelor of Arts from DePaul University in 1941. In 1948 he got a Master of Arts from the University of Chicago.
Louis Baldwin began his career as assistant professor of English at DePaul University, Chicago, Illinois. In 1952, he became writer at Peoples Gas Co. Six year later he found the position of writer and supervisor at Sandia National Laboratories, Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Baldwin is also the author of several biographical books emphasizing the accomplishments of people who successfully overcame obstacles in their way. In Triumph over the Odds, for example, Baldwin profiles thirty- seven figures, from the biblical Moses to the American politician Ronald Reagan, in their successful struggles against adversity.
Similarly, Baldwin's book Women of Strength, a reference work that focuses on women through history who have succeeded professionally in careers often earmarked for men, is characterized by the author's unusual choice of subjects profiled, each of whom is treated to a “short, lively" exposition by the author. Baldwin takes the same tack in The Loves of Their Lives, in which he profiles thirty-eight famous couples through history, from Heloise and Abelard, to Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn, and from Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas to Harry and Bess Truman.
Baldwin has also written several books with religious themes. Included among these is The Pope and the Mavericks, in which he surveys the ideas of several theologians whose writings have been controversial in the history of the Catholic Church and the varying papal responses to them. Baldwin emphasizes that often nonconformist theologians who were considered heretical were eventually exonerated by the Church.
