Cioffi began working with the Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS) in 1947 as a copyboy. He became a writer, night news editor, and the Washington, D.C. bureau chief before venturing to Korea as a war correspondent in the early 1950s.
He joined the American Broadcasting Companies (ABC) in 1961 as chief European correspondent and Far East correspondent. In 1965 he attained the post of foreign correspondent in Germany and Paris, France. From 1977 to 1982 he was the United Nations bureau chief, then served as the bureau chief for the Satellite News Channel from 1982 to 1983.
Cioffi then returned to his work covering the United Nations. He died of complications from liver cancer, May 2, 1998, in New York.
Mr. Cioffi was married and had a son.
