Louis Alan Garfinkle was born on February 11, 1928, in Seattle, Washington. He was the son of Louis and Golda (Himelhoch) Garfinkle.
Louis Garfinkle attended the University of California in Berkeley, and the University of Washington in Seattle. In 1948, he received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Southern California.
Garfinkle began his career in 1945, when he became a writer in Station KOMO company, in Seattle, Washington. Then, from 1948 to 1950, he worked as a writer of educational documentary films at Emerson Films, and from 1950 to 1953, Garfinkle was a writer and director of training and informational films at Signal Photo. In 1953, he was an advertising copywriter at Weinberg Advertising.
From 1954 to 1955, Garfinkle headed documentary research in television at the University of California in Berkeley, California. The next year, he co-founded a Maxim Productions Inc., and, in 1957, he was a screenwriter and producer at the United Artists in Los Angeles, California. From 1958 to 1966, Garfinkle was a television writer at Selmur Productions, and from 1971 to 1974, he became a screenwriter at Rosamond Productions. In 1973, Louis was a screenwriter at American International in Los Angeles, California. In 1978, Garfinkle was appointed a screenwriter at Won Five Inc., in Los Angeles, California, and in 1989, he co-founded the Collaborator Systems Inc. Collaborator was a scriptwriting software used in the 1990s.

1958Garfinkle was a member of the board of advisers for film writing, Writers Guild of America, Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Dramatists Guild, Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, Poets, Playwrights, Editors, Essayists and of the Novelists Association as well.
On August 6, 1958, Garfinkle married Audrey Elyse Alpert. They had three children: Wendy Cane, Luane Davis and Gwynne.
