From age of 15 taught school winters and worked on his father’s farm in summer. Entered United States homestead, 1873, in Western part of Marathon Company, Wisconsin, and in 1879 sold it to pay expenses of law course in University of Wisconsin, Bachelor of Laws, 1881. Settled in practice at Wausau.
City attorney there, 1893.
Chairman Republican Committee, Marathon Company, Wisconsin, 1890-1896. Assistant attorney-general of the United States, 1897-1906.
