Background
L'Amour, Louis Dearborn was born in 1908 in Jamestown, North Dakota, United States. Son of Louis Charles and Emily (Dearborn) LaMoore.
(Colonel Utah Blaine, held captive by the Army of the Revo...)
Colonel Utah Blaine, held captive by the Army of the Revolution, broke out of jail and headed north from Mexico with nothing but the clothes on his back. Then he found new trouble struggling at the end of a noose–and stepped in just in time to save the life of a Texas rancher. The would-be executioners were the rancher’s own men, looking to steal his land. Now Utah has a unique proposition: Have the wealthy Texan play dead, introduce himself as the spread’s new foreman, and take care of the outlaws one by one. The wage to fight another man’s war? A hundred a month plus expenses. The cost of falling in love while he earns that wage? It wasn’t exactly part of the original agreement, but Utah will soon find out–unless the bad guys get to him first.

(The open West was a land where wanderers could find thems...)
The open West was a land where wanderers could find themselves a home-a home to fight for, to be changed by, sometimes to die for. Jed Asbury was one such journeyman, taking on the identity of a dead man. Allen Ring was another: he'd won his plot of land in a card game only to find he had to win again with a gun. From a has-been boxer to a ranch hand taking on his bosses' troubles, the characters in these classic Louis L'Amour short stories are all "riding for the brand"-staying loyal to what matters, staking the West with their courage and their blood.

Bud Miles was a boy when he crossed the Mississippi. But Bud buried his father after an Indian attack, and as the wagon train pushed on through Sioux country, the boy stood as tall as any man ... Tell Sackett killed cougars at fourteen and fought a war at fifteen. Now Tell was hauling dangerous freight--a soldier's wife and a fortune in gold--knowing that someone wanted him dead ... Laurie Bonnet was a mail-order bride who thought she was a failure on the frontier. But when the chips were down, she was the only one who could save her husband's life ... In these marvelous stories of the West, Louis L'Amour tells of travelers, gunfighters, homesteaders, and adventurers: men and women making hard and sudden choices and fighting battles that could cut a person's life short--or open up a bold new future on the American frontier.

(It was the only water for miles in a vast, sun-blasted de...)
It was the only water for miles in a vast, sun-blasted desert where water meant survival. So Logan Cates naturally headed for Papago Wells. But he wasn’t the only one. Fleeing the fierce Churupati and his Apache warriors, other travelers had come there too. And when the Apaches found them, they began a siege as relentless and unforgiving as the barren land…and just as inescapable. The last thing Cates wanted was to be responsible for the lives of thirteen desperate strangers and a shipment of gold. But he knew that if they were to survive, he was their last chance. He also knew that some in the party were willing to die—or kill—to get their hands on the money. If he couldn’t get them to work together, it wouldn’t be the desert or even the Apaches that would do them in—it would be the greed of the very people he was trying to save.

From his decision to leave school at fifteen to roam the world, to his recollections of life as a hobo on the Southern Pacific Railroad, as a cattle skinner in Texas, as a merchant seaman in Singapore and the West Indies, and as an itinerant bare-knuckled prizefighter across small-town America, here is Louis L'Amour's memoir of his lifelong love affair with learning--from books, from yondering, and from some remarkable men and women--that shaped him as a storyteller and as a man. Like classic L'Amour fiction, Education of a Wandering Man mixes authentic frontier drama--such as the author's desperate efforts to survive a sudden two-day trek across the blazing Mojave desert--with true-life characters like Shanghai waterfront toughs, desert prospectors, and cowboys whom Louis L'Amour met while traveling the globe. At last, in his own words, this is a story of a one-of-a-kind life lived to the fullest . . . a life that inspired the books that will forever enable us to relive our glorious frontier heritage.

But I have written many stories with entirely different settings which I have long wanted to share with my readers. “I have collected some of these in Yondering. They are glimpses of what my own life was like during the early years. Those were the rough years; often I was hungry, out of work and facing situations such as I have since written about. “Although these stories take place in a variety of locales, they are stories of people living under conditions similar to the way they might have lived on the frontier. It began with gold that had once belonged to Montezuma. Stolen and cached in a church in Mexico, it was recovered by two army officers who fled north for the French settlements. Along the way one stabbed the other to death. The remaining officer was eventually killed by Plains Indians, but he buried the treasure just before he died. Now Ronan Chantry, a handful of trappers, and an Irish girl whose father was killed after telling her a few vague landmarks are searching for the lost treasure. But they are not alone. The girl’s uncle, Rafen Falvey, wants it, too. Like Chantry, he is well educated, bold, and determined. Under different circumstances the two men might have been friends. But in all likelihood it wouldn’t have made any difference. When it comes to gold, even friendship doesn’t keep men from killing each other.

For fifteen years Curry has ruled supreme. But the king is getting old, and he wants to turn his legacy over to someone and get out —someone like Mike. Mike is a young man who can handle a knife, a gun, his fists, and who’s been trained in every criminal skill. But so far he’s never broken the law. In each of these tales of adventure by Louis L'Amour, a young gunslinger must face danger and trials brought on by his background or his own actions--and then decide to follow the same destiny or seek a new one. In The Rider of Lost Creek, Lance Kilkenny's gun is believed to be the fastest in the West, but once the gunfight is over, he disappears. Most folks don't even know what he looks like. Some time back, Mort Davis saved Kilkenny's life after he was shot up. Now Davis needs Kilkenny's help. He has filed a claim on a water hole near Lost Creek in the live oak country. The district is dominated by two wealthy cattlemen, Webb Steele and Chet Lord, each one desiring for himself the water hole that Davis claims. Beautiful Nita Riordan owns the local saloon, and between her charms and the feuding ranchers, Lance Kilkenny has his work cut out for him. In The Trail to Peach Meadow Canyon, Mike Bastian, who was orphaned as a child, was taken in by the legendary outlaw Ben Curry and raised and trained to take over his empire of crime. Today, Mike is the quickest draw and the stealthiest tracker around, and Ben Curry is getting ready to retire. To test Mike's wings, he has set him a task: the planning and execution of a gold-train robbery. Now, as he prepares for his first criminal job, Mike must decide whether to follow the path that has been set before him or to carve out a destiny of his own. If he assumes the position of gang leader, he will face deadly competition from within Curry's band; yet if he refuses, he may not be allowed to leave the pack alive. The dilemma is further complicated when he falls for Drusilla, Ben Curry's real daughter, who knows nothing of her father's career. Either way Mike chooses, a showdown is in store.

A WORD FROM LOUIS L’AMOUR “Almost four decades ago, when my fiction was being published exclusively in ‘pulp’ western magazines, I wrote a number of novel-length stories, known back then as ‘magazine novels.’ In creating them, I lived with my characters so closely that their lives were still as much a part of me as I was of them long after the issues in which they appeared went out of print. Proud as I was of how I presented the characters and their adventures in the pages of the magazines, I wanted to tell the reader more about my people and why they did what they did. So, over the years, I revised and expanded these magazine works into novels that I published as full-length paperbacks under different titles. “These particular early magazine versions of my books have long been a source of considerable speculation and curiosity among many of my readers, so much so of late, that now I’ve decided to bring four of my ‘magazine novels’ back into print in this latest volume of my short fiction. “I hope you enjoy them.” FEATURING • Showdown Trail • A Man Called Trent • The Trail to Peach Meadow Canyon • The Rider of the Ruby Hills

RIDE ALONG INTO DANGER Traveling under an alias, the last thing gunman Clip Haynes wanted was attention. But Basin City needed a town-taming marshal, and a cold-blooded murderer was hiding behind Haynes’s real name. Now Haynes was coming out of hiding to protect his honor, save a town, and catch a killer—even if it cost him his life. Lou Morgan was as tough as they came. But it wasn’t just the money or the challenge that motivated him to take on a suicide job involving a buried Spanish treasure and two greedy killers. It was love for a beautiful señorita who had left him for dead years ago. It’s not easy being the new schoolma’am in town . . . especially when you’re a man. But Van Brady isn’t quite the tenderfoot he seems, and before he’s through he’ll teach a few hard cases a lesson they’ll never forget. From the rough-and-tumble streets of San Francisco to the dry desert plains of Texas, from a roughshod gambler willing to wager his own life on a single bet to a killer with a heart, here are stirring tales of the Old West as only Louis L’Amour can write them, tales of men and women risking their lives, fighting their wars, and standing tall on the American frontier.

Before the sun sets, bullets are flying. In six days a town called Confusion appeared . . . and on the seventh it could disappear, consumed by the flames of lawlessness and violence. On one side are those who understand only brute force. On the other are men who want law and order but are ready to use a noose to achieve their ends. Between them stand Matt Coburn and Dick Felton: one a hardened realist, the other an idealist trying to dig a fortune from the muddy hillside. Outnumbered and outgunned, Felton and Coburn can't afford to be outmaneuvered. Davis calls upon Kilkenny to help him convince the two men that they are pawns in a bigger game. Lance Kilkenny has the reputation of being the fastest gun in the West, that once there is a gunfight he leaves the district right after it is over, and that very little is known about him, even what he looks like. One day some time back Mort Davis saved Kilkenny's life after he was shot up and now Davis has sent out word that he needs Kilkenny's help. Mort has filed a claim on a water hole near Lost Creek in the Live Oak country. The district is dominated by two wealthy cattlemen, Webb Steele and Chet Lord, and both are at loggerheads, each one claiming for himself the water hole that David occupies. There is a mystery man who has a secret cabin in Apple Canon just above the saloon operated by Nina Riordan and her bodyguard, Jamie Brigo. It is this man who is responsible for stirring up the trouble between Steele and Lord, figuring they will kill each other off so he can claim both their ranches. There is also a mad-dog killer loose in the district and there have been a number of murders over the years. Kilkenny enters the fracas, meets and falls in love with Nita, and then works to get Steele and Lord to realize that they are pawns in a bigger game.

(Louis L'Amour said that the West was no place for the fri...)
Louis L'Amour said that the West was no place for the frightened or the mean. It was a ''big country needing big men and women to live in it.'' The two stories in this collection (Big Country, Volume 1)provide a good sample of the kinds of people he had in mind. In Ride, You Tonto Raiders Matt Sabre is a young and experienced gunfighter. When he shoots a man who forces him to draw, to his surprise, the man on his deathbed gives him $5,000 and begs him to take the money to his wife who is alone defending the family ranch in the Mogollons. A combination of guilt, regret, and wanting to do the right thing leads Matt Sabre to make that ride. In War Party a boy on the brink of manhood, a resourceful frontier woman who has beauty as well as fortitude, and a strong male character who is single and hence marriageable come together in this powerful, romantic, and strangely compelling vision of the American West.

Filled with action, adventure, mystery, and historical detail, the Sackett series is a remarkable contribution by one of America’s greatest storytellers. The Sky-liners Flagan and Galloway Sackett had made a deal to escort Judith Costello, the granddaughter of a wealthy Irish horse trader, to her father’s home in Colorado. Flagan saw nothing but trouble in the pretty, fiery young woman, but they needed the horses. Unfortunately, Flagan was right, for Judith had fallen for James Black Fetchen, a charismatic gunman whose courtship hid the darkest of intentions. Flagan and Galloway could only guess why Judith was so important to Fetchen and what awaited them at her father’s ranch. One thing Flagan knew for sure: the tough and spirited woman had won his heart. But could he trust her with his life? Galloway Trouble was following Flagan Sackett with a vengeance. Captured and tortured by a band of Apaches, he had escaped into the rugged San Juan country, where he would try to stay alive until his brother, Galloway, could find him. But the brothers were about to find worse trouble ahead. Their plan to establish a ranch had angered the Dunn clan, who had decided that the vast range would be theirs alone. Now Galloway and Flagan would face an enemy who killed for sport—but as long as other Sacketts lived, they would not fight alone….

(Unfortunately Mr. L'Amour died several years ago, otherwi...)
Unfortunately Mr. L'Amour died several years ago, otherwise I'd still be buying whatever he was writing! Great stories! Very seldom does he use off color dialog, and never any explicit sex scenes --- it's always left to your imagination. But his books are always full of great metaphors, such as: "My horse headed back in such a hurry that you'd 'a thought he'd left somethin' at the hotel." Or, "I've told folks that I'd sung before audiences of 3,000 --- I just didn't tell them I was talkin' about cows. I'd been hoping to find all the Sackett books together. I found this set on the Amazon listing and am very pleased with it. I haven't started to read them yet. I'm using them as a reward for myself. I have some projects that I am having trouble motivating myself to complete. When I complete each major profect, I will take time out to read a volume of Sackett stories. It is doubtful that any author could be as at home in the world re-created in his novels as Louis Dearborn L'Amour. Not only could he physically fill the boots of the rugged characters he wrote about, but he literally "walked the land my characters walk." His personal experiences as well as his lifelong devotion to historical research combined to give Mr. L'Amour the unique knowledge and understanding of people, events, and the challenge of the American frontier that became the hallmarks of his popularity.

Tom Healy was in trouble. His theatrical troupe needed to get to Alder Gulch, Montana, and the weather was turning. Andy Barker promised Tom he could get them there safely, but Tom was reluctant to trust him: he had the lives of three actresses to consider, and his personal feelings for Janice further heightened his concern. Then King Mabry showed up. Although Tom didn’t like the way he looked at Janice, he could see that Mabry made Barker uneasy. So Tom invited Mabry to join them. Tom was right to be worried, because Barker had a plan. He knew that the wagons carried something more than actors and scenery. He and his men were going to steal it any way they could. And that included murder.

(Lawman, manhunter, peacemaker—it takes a hard breed of ma...)
Lawman, manhunter, peacemaker—it takes a hard breed of man to survive on the frontier, but Chick Bowdrie stands head and shoulders above the rest. This outlaw turned Texas Ranger was one of the favorite protagonists of master storyteller Louis L’Amour, appearing in a total of nineteen short stories bursting with unforgettable heroics and harrowing action. They’re all here in this eBook bundle, together forming an epic portrait of a man standing at the crossroads between good and evil: McNelly Knows a Ranger • A Job for a Ranger • Bowdrie Rides a Coyote Trail • A Trail to the West • The Outlaws of Poplar Creek • Bowdrie Follows a Cold Trail • More Brains Than Bullets • The Road to Casa Piedras • Bowdrie Passes Through • Where Buzzards Fly • South of Deadwood • Too Tough to Brand • Case Closed—No Prisoners • The Killer from the Pecos • A Ranger Rides to Town • Rain on the Mountain Fork • Down Sonora Way • Strange Pursuit • Strawhouse Trail The name is Bowdrie. It was a name that caused the most hardened gunmen to break out in a cold sweat. Chick Bowdrie. He could have ridden the outlaw trail, but the Texas Rangers recruited him because they didn’t want to have to fight against him. Pursuing the most wanted men in the Southwest, he knew all too well the dusty trails, the bitter cattle feuds, the desperate killers, and the quiet, weather-beaten, wind-blasted towns that could explode into action with the wrong word. He had sworn to carry out the law, but there were times when he had to apply justice with his fists and his guns. They called in the Rangers to handle the tough ones, and there was never a Ranger tougher or smarter than Bowdrie.

(The first graphic novel adaptation of the work of master ...)
The first graphic novel adaptation of the work of master storyteller Louis L’Amour is a dynamic tale of the Old West that explores the borderlands of loyalty and betrayal with the emotional grittiness of a noir thriller. New Mexico, 1887, a land in the midst of the worst drought anyone can remember. Family histories and loyalties run deep, but when rancher Tom Forrester has his access to the Pecos River cut off by the son of his old partner, he convinces his foreman, Shad Marone, to pay Jud Bowman back for the discourtesy. Yet what starts as a simple act of petty revenge quickly spirals into a cycle of violence that no one can control. Now Marone is on the run, pursued by a sheriff’s posse across a rugged desert landscape. Leading the chase is Jesus Lopez, a half-Mexican, half-Apache with a personal stake in bringing Shad to justice. Newly released from jail, trusted by no one, Lopez swears he’s the only man who can track Marone down. That may be true. But who will live and who will die and what price will be paid in suffering are open questions. Fate and the Jornada del Muerto desert possess a harsh justice that is all their own. With a propulsive script from Beau L’Amour and Kathy Nolan, adapted by Charles Santino and illustrated in bold black-and-white by Thomas Yeates, Law of the Desert Born captures the dust and blood of Louis L’Amour’s West—a world where the difference between a hero and a villain can be as wide as the gap between an act of kindness or brutality or as narrow as a misspoken word. Praise for Law of the Desert Born “This actually may be the story’s ideal form, since the author’s son Beau came to realize that the core of the tale was the tense relationship between Marone and Lopez. . . . The graphic novel version provides room to develop this theme. Yeates’s black-and-white depiction of the rugged landscape and the hard-bitten characters is superb. The result is stunning and richly textured.”—Publishers Weekly “An interesting tale of range rivalries turned bloody . . . Fans of L’Amour’s stories should enjoy this work, adults or teens.”—Library Journal “Readers are in for a real treat—with an amazing level of detail and ambience that breathes new life into Louis L’Amour’s already stunning story.”—Cowboys & Indians “A masterpiece both in story and art that complements the mood.”—It’s All Comic to Me

The group of easterners Rock Bannon was scouting for faced another problem. They were being deceived. When he warned them to remain on the Humboldt Trail, Sharon Crockett and the others refused to listen. Mort Harper, a stranger riding a beautiful black mare, had dazzled them with his charm and good looks. The southern route was the best way to go, Harper told them. But best for whom? Bannon wondered. That route led straight to the Salt Lake Desert. The conditions would be brutal. And if Harper wasn’t steering them toward those deadly alkali flats, where were they headed? And what would happen once they got there?

(Little did Louis L'Amour realize back in 1960 when he pub...)
Little did Louis L'Amour realize back in 1960 when he published The Daybreakers, a novel about two brothers who came west after the Civil War, that he had begun creating what would become perhaps North America's most widely followed literary family: the Sacketts. The stories of ten generations of Sackett men and women as they forged westward from tyranny-wracked seventeenth-century England across the American continent have captivated readers for three decades through seventeen novels with nearly forty millions copies in print. The traditions and adventures of this family of rugged individualists who stand indomitably united when any Sackett is in trouble have inspired country songs, a popular television miniseries starring Tom Selleck (as Orrin Sackett) and Sam Elliot (as Tell Sackett), thousands of reader queries—and now, a rare full-length work of non-fiction by the worlds' all-time best-selling frontier novelist. In a 60 Minutes profile in which he hailed Louis L'Amour as "our professor emeritus of how the West was won," correspondent Morley Safer observed that "his plots may be fiction but the details therein are fact." The Sackett Companion is the author's long-savored opportunity to present the research and probe the factors behind his Sackett fiction—novel by novel—and to elaborate on their real and fictional characters, their geography and locales, and their historical eras in encyclopedia-like detail. In this book, subtitled A Personal Guide To The Sackett Novels, L'Amour takes us on a guided tour of his imagination to introduce us to the never-before-told sources and inspirations for these stories and the people and places that populate them. He retraces some of his travels in which he has walked the land the Sacketts walk, reliving such personal memories as the street fight he had on a hot dusty morning in New Mexico that ultimately led to the birth of the Sacketts.

(In one of his most riveting novels of adventure, America’...)
In one of his most riveting novels of adventure, America’s favorite storyteller follows the treacherous trail of an outlaw determined to make his big strike and then disappear into a new life. But can a wrong turn be made righ—and can the heart of a hardened man still be moved by a second chance at happiness? Here’s a hard-hitting, uniquely American tale of raw courage, haunting regret, and hope against all odds as only Louis L’Amour can tell it. Considine bristled at the word “thief,” but that’s what he was. He’d been out of money, and one mistake had just led to another. Now he had four years of crime behind him and little to show for it—except the dubious honor of being a hunted man all over the country. But just south of the border there was one last chance it could all pay off. Obaro was a tough town full of tough men—boasting a bank no one had ever tapped. But it wasn’t just the bank that rankled Considine, it was the man who ran Obaro. Sheriff Pete Runyon was a friend turned rival who’d married the girl Considine once loved. He was also the only man to beat Considine in a knock-down fight. Outwitting Runyon now would be sweet revenge on many levels. Then Considine could just take the money and run–literally—to the border, buy a small ranch, and start anew. Considine didn’t count on meeting Lennie, a beautiful young woman, and her trail-savvy but reckless father, a former outlaw trying to get far enough away from his past to give his daughter a future. The two were headed straight for Apache country and certain death. Now Considine and his gang can either ride like hell for the border just ahead of an angry posse—or join the old man and the girl in a desperate last stand atop High Lonesome against blood-hungry warriors. The choice is simple: risk the hangman’s noose or an Apache bullet.

One for the Mojave Kid Few men were as deadly–or troublesome–with a gun as the Mohave Kid. Ab Kale, marshal of Hinkley, had warned the Kid to stay away from his town. Even as he trained his own adopted son, Riley, to handle a gun, he worried for both of them. He knew the Kid was the bloodthirsty sort who would one day force a showdown. But he couldn’t know when…or prepare Riley for the test of his young life. Lonigan Ruth Gurney arrived home to find her late father’s cattle ranch in debt, and their trail-boss, Lonigan, missing. As luck would have it, there is a conveniently available replacement–Hoey Ives. The ranch hands are uneasy with Ives’s place on the drive, but the money is desperately needed and there’s no time to wait for Lonigan. After days on the trail with no sign of water, weak cattle, and restless men, Ruth can’t help but have second thoughts about the seemingly trustworthy Ives. When he suddenly proposes and asks for more than her hand in marriage, Ruth knows she has to find out what he’s really up to–and fast. War Party Bud Miles was a boy when he crossed the Mississippi.

( A WORD FROM LOUIS L’AMOUR “Almost forty years ago, ...)
A WORD FROM LOUIS L’AMOUR “Almost forty years ago, when my fiction was being published exclusively in ‘pulp’ western magazines, I wrote several novel-length stories, which my editors called ‘magazine novels.’ In creating them, I became so involved with my characters that their lives were still as much a part of me as I was of them long after the issues in which they appeared became collector’s items. Pleased as I was about how I brought the characters and their adventures to life in the pages of the magazines, I still wanted the reader to know more about my people and why they did what they did. So, over the years, I revised and expanded these magazine works into fuller-length novels that I published in paperback under other titles. “These particular early magazine versions of my books have long been a source of great speculation and curiosity among many of my readers, so much so of late, that I’m now pleased to collect three of them in book form for the first time. “I hope you enjoy them.”

(William Tell Sackett had followed a different path from h...)
William Tell Sackett had followed a different path from his younger brothers, but his name, like theirs, was spoken with respect and just a little fear. Where Orrin had brought law and order from New Mexico to the plains of Montana, backed up by the gunfighting talents of his brother Tye, Tell Sackett's destiny drew him to Texas after he had to kill a man. There, in the high, lonesome country, he came upon a vein of pure gold. All he'd wanted was enough to buy a ranch, but he soon learned that gold had ways of its own with men.

Classic Western adventure from America's favorite storyteller, Louis L'Amour. Louis L'Amour brings you the Wild West as you've never heard it before. This classic story, complete with a full cast, stirring music, and authentic sound effects, sweeps listeners back to the rough and tumble days of the Old West, when men put their lives on the line for the sake of honor, and truth and justice were fought on the open plain. A dusty stranger comes into the town of Boquilla in search of a drink after many hard weeks riding the trails. He enters the saloon, and within minutes the town bully is dead on the floor. Who is the stranger? Is he John Wesley Hardin? Or the legendary Marshal Kilkenny? Speculation and admiration run through the town like wildfire. To show their gratitude, the townsfolk persuade the stranger to stay awhile. All the free whiskey he can drink and the finest hotel room in town are only the beginning of the good life for this man, more accustomed to the cold hard ground and meals of greasy bacon and biscuits. The attractions of the dangerous stranger are also irresistible to the pretty young women in town. But the stranger's luck cannot continue. Someone suspects that he is not who he pretends to be. After all, according to legend, Kilkenny always leaves town after killing the bad guy. Why would he stick around this time?
