Background
JORDAN, Louis Henry was born on July 27, 1855 in Halifax, Canada. Son of late William Jordan, merchant, Halifax.
(Excerpt from Comparative Religion, Its Genesis and Growth...)
Excerpt from Comparative Religion, Its Genesis and Growth Mr. Jordan is an earnest and laborious student, whose book needs no introduction from me. Its merits are sufficient to commend it to all who are interested in the study of Religions, or who may wish to know them both in themselves and in their comparative relations. Mr. Jordan has made many sacrifices for the work which he now gives to the world. He has for years sundered many friendships, surrendered his pastoral ties, wandered and dwelt in lands remote from his delightful Canadian home, that he might with a freer and more unfettered mind pursue the studies which have taken shape in this book. He has not only steeped himself in the literature of his subject, but has also visited the great Universities, English, Continental, or American, where he could, by the help whether of the library or the living voice, acquaint himself with what had been, and was being, thought and accomplished in the field which he has cultivated with such remarkable pains. And now he here lays at our feet the fruit of these years of labour, that we may eat while we rest, and reap the profit of his toil. For the many studious men who seek to know the Religions of Man, this work ought to have distinct value. First, it should inform them as to the best literature which has been written on the subject, and the problems inquiry has raised in the minds of those scholars and thinkers who have investigated the questions which concern Man and his Religions. (Excerpt from Comparative Religion, Its Method and Scope: ...)
Excerpt from Comparative Religion, Its Method and Scope: A Paper Read (in Part) At the Third International Congress of the History of Religions, Oxford, September 17, 1908 A difficult problem has been confronting students of religion for a considerable period, and the embarrassment of the situation has been steadily growing. If we shall find ourselves able to reach and register a verdict, or if our present discussion should succeed only in making more clear the principles that underlie a widely prevalent diversity of opinion, we shall assist in removing an issue by which many are still perplexed, and in lending impetus to a line of inquiry that desires and deserves our help. To me, it is a source of unbounded satisfaction that room has been made in our programme, this year, for several papers that deal expressly with Comparative Religion. One reader has chosen for his subject 'A Science of Comparative Religion,' and I know in advance that he is going to bring us an affirmative answer to that query. It has long been one of my dreams that I might yet see this vast and expanding department of investigation accorded that place and prominence to which it is entitled. The action of the Executive Committee of this Congress - their courageous new departure, reference to which has already been made - cannot fail to contribute materially towards the realization of this hope. Further subdivision of the work undertaken by these quadrennial conferences will eventually follow, with results of the very first importance for the prosecution of our studies. I. The Methods and Scope of the Science of Religion. - It is desirable that, for a moment, we should make a retrospective glance. Let us recall, as a preliminary step, the methods and scope of the Science of Religion. It is essential that one or two of the considerations which such a survey suggests should be clearly borne in mind. By 'The Science of Religion' we mean that increasing group of studies, diverse yet closely interrelated, by which man is seeking to unravel the mystery of his religious acts and aspirations. In particular, the Science of Religion is the product of the deliberate investigation of the facts of religion - and of all the facts, whatever their relative age, number, or consequence - when these data are dealt with in accordance with some clearly defined scientific method. These methods have varied very greatly, and naturally they have been applied with varying degrees of proficiency. (Excerpt from Modernism in Italy: Its Origin, Its Incentiv...)
Excerpt from Modernism in Italy: Its Origin, Its Incentive, Its Leaders, and Its Aims Modernism is the name applied to a movement that has played many parts, and on widely-separated stages. Certainly it is not a movement that is peculiar to the century in which it formulated and issued its challenge. It is not a movement that is peculiar to Italy. Nor yet is it a movement that is peculiar to the Church of Rome. At the same time, in the sense in which the designation is usually employed to-day, it represents not only a distinctively Catholic movement, but possibly also a great turning-point in the history of a faith that has exercised age-long and world-wide sway. It is proverbially difficult, when describing an agitation which comprises a long series of occurrences (some incidental, some contrived, but all tending towards a common end), to accord full weight - and yet no undue amount of weight - to each circumstance that has exercised an influence of really commanding importance. Various factors in the situation, admittedly of genuine moment, tend to rise into a quite unwarranted prominence in the historian's mind. It may be that the factors in question obtrude themselves so persistently that they hide the presence of others which likewise contributed their quota to the results ultimately obtained. Or it may be that these factors make insidious appeal to the historian's personal bias, and thus his sounder judgment is unconsciously deflected and overborne. The task is never an easy one; but unquestionably it becomes doubly difficult when one has to describe a crisis that is still in process of evolution, and especially if it is taking place within the theological arena.
