French poet, was born Louise Victorine Choquet in Paris on Nov. 30, 1813, and reared in the country, near Montdidier.
Her father undertook her early education, and in 1829 she was sent to a school in Paris.
In 1838 she went to Berlin for one year to study German.
On another visit to Berlin in 1843 she met and married Paul Ackermann, an Alsatian philologist. After two years of happy married life he died, and she moved to Nice, settling there until her return to Paris in 1874. Her poetry was first published in 1874, in the Revue des Deux-Mondes, meeting with some acclaim, but also with considerable criticism for its atheism and its pessimistic outlook. Her style is vigorous, though somber, with some originality of expression, but little of thought, and her usual theme is melancholy. Her works consist of Contes en vers (written, 1855) (English translation, "Verse Stories"), PremièresPremieres poésiespoesies (written, 1863) ("Early Poetry"), PoésiesPoesies philosophiques (1874) ("Philosophical Poetry"), and PenséesPensees d'une solitaire (including a short autobiography, 1883) ("Thoughts of a Recluse"). She died in Nice, Aug. 2, 1890.
