Smith, Lowell H. was born on October 8, 1892 in Santa Barbara, California, United States. Son of Jasper G. and Nora M. (Holland) Smith.


Education high school, San Fernando, California, and San Fernando Academy.


With the Aviation Service of Mexican Army, 1915. Mechanical engineer, silver mines of Nevada, 1916-1917. Enlisted as private Aviation Service, N.A., April 1917.

Commissioned First lieutenant, December 1917. Captain, October 1918. Participated in endurance test, New York to San Francisco, 1919.

Commissioned captain United States Army (regular army), July 1, 1920. Commander round the world airplane flight, 1924, a distance approximately of 26,103 miles in 365 hours 11 minutes flying time, and a total period of 175 days between departure from Seattle, Washington, April 6, and return to Seattle, September 28, Held 16 world flying records for speed, duration and distance.
