Luce Irigaray is a a Belgian-born French educator, writer, feminist, philosopher, linguist, psycholinguist, psychoanalyst and cultural theorist. She is best known for her works "Speculum of the Other Woman" (1974) and "This Sex Which Is Not One" (1977).

Background

Luce Irigaray was born on May 3, 1930 in Blaton, Bernissart, Wallonia, Belgium.

Education

Luce graduated from the University of Louvain with an M.A. (philosophy and literature) in 1955 and from the University of Paris with an M.A. (psychology) in 1961. She received from Institut de Psychologie de Paris the diploma (psychopathology) in 1962. In 1968 she earned from the University of Paris X at Nanterre a Ph.D. (linguistics). She laso received from the University of Paris VIII her Ph.D. (philosophy) in 1974 and a Ph.D. from Ecole Freudienne (honors).

Career

Luce worked as a high school teacher in Brussels in 1956-1959. She was also an assistant researcher at Fondation Nationale de la Recherce Scientifique, Belgium from 1962 to 1964. Irigaray also worked at the University of Paris VIII, Vincennes as an instructor from 1970 to 1974. She worked at Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, Paris as an assistant researcher, then as director of research since 1986. She was also a teacher at Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales in 1985-1986, at College International de Philosophic, Paris between 1988 and 1990, and at Centre Americain d’Etudes Critiques in 1989-1990. Irigaray was lecturer at women’s groups and conferences throughout Europe and North America.
