Lucienne Frappier-Mazur was born on April 1, 1932 in Marseilles, France. She is the daughter of Jean Frappier, a professor, and Jeanne (Serres) Frappier, a high school teacher.

Lucienne studied at Paris-Sorbonne University and attained Bachelor of Arts, Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in 1973.
Lucienne started her career as an assistant professor in 1962 at University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, United States and held the position till 1971, when she became an associate professor. In 1979 Lucienne became a professor of French. She held the position till 1996.
Beginning from 1985 to 1988 Lucienne was a member of editorial board at University of Pennsylvania Press in Pennsylvania, United States. Frappier-Mazur also acted as a member of editorial boards of French Forum, Nineteenth Century French Studies and Symposium.
Lucienne started to serve as a visiting professor in 1987 at University of California in Santa Barbara, United States. Two years later, in 1989, she held the same post at Yale University. In 1991 Lucienne lectured at Paris Diderot University.
Frappier-Mazur worked as an associate director of French Institute in 1995. The next year she became a professor emerita.
She also served as an educator and lecturer at other colleges and universities, including Cornell University, Dartmouth College, Princeton University, San Diego State University, University of Michigan, University of Southern California and University of Wisconsin.

Lucienne married Oleh Mazur on April 7, 1962. On October 31, 1996 Oleh died. The couple had one child: Francois-Ihor Mazur.
