What is unique about this book? It is written by students! Six Idalia High School Writing Lab students in Idalia, Colorado, and their teacher set out on a joint venture during the 1999-2000 school year to again record stories and articles of their community, located on the Eastern Plains of Colorado, to inspire future generations, and to give the present generation a "sense of place." Read about the discovery of Roman Nose's body, some World War II missions over Germany, "unknown" grave sites, children's grave sites, a flight with Charles Lindbergh, hunting Idalia-area game animals, many humorous stories (one about some "tipsy" pigs), life in a one-room school and recess games, the wisdom of children, a newly discovered cemetery and the first church in the area, the dangers of blizzards on the Eastern Plains, archaeological digs near Idalia, Bonny Dam, Dr. Garcia, and even some family lore. All stories are based on interviews and enhanced with many photographs. Two reasons guided the writing of this book: to print previously unpublished oral histories of the students' neighbors (before the stories are lost) and to once again record some historical information that is now out-of-print. In the process, the students all achieved a new-found pride in their community. And their hope is that this book will inspire other students to record the histories of their communities.
