Nothing is known about his personal life.
Nothing is known about his personal life.
Ampelius is known only as the author of the scholarly work "Liber memorialis" and more about him, practically nothing is known. Even the era when he lived remains uncertain. Assumptions range from the reign of Trajan to the time of Constantine I the Great.
At one time it was believed that the book was dedicated to the Roman Emperor Makrin, who ruled in 217-218, and therefore was generally credited with this book of his time; others, however, based on the fact that Sidonia Apollinaria mentions some writer of Ampelia, believed her work of IV or V century; but later they began to incline to the fact that the work was already written under Antoninus Pie.
The first edition of this book was carried out in Paris in 1638 by Salaudius (Claudius Salmasius), then the book was repeatedly reprinted.
