Ordained to the ministry of Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1885. Pastor of Frankenmuth, Michigan, 1885-1893. Professor Biblical introduction, exegesis and liturgics.

Concordia Theological Seminary since 1893, president, 1931-1943. President of Evangelical Lutheran Synodical Conference N.A., 1927-1944.
