Luigi Guardigli

Background

Guardigli was born in Ravenna, Italy, on July 20, 1923.

Education

When Luigi Guardigli was eighteen, he started his education at the Fine Arts Academy of Ravenna. During the second World War he was recruited and served between 1943 and 1946 in the Regia Marina (Italian Royal Navy) at La Spezia). When the war was over, Guardigli resumed his studies at the Ravenna, successfully graduating and receiving his diploma in 1948. He then attended the School of Painting and Mosaics (later Mosaic Art School), which was also situated in Ravenna. He graduated from it in 1951.

Career

Between 1951 and 1955 Guardigli cooperated with the Gruppo mosaicisti of Ravenna and restored a number of mosaics. At the end of November 1951, he went to Paris to teach at the Ecole d'Art Italien (School of Italian Art), serving as an assistant to the Italian Futurist painter Gino Severini, who was the founder and director of the school.

Together with his fellow mosaicist, Ravennan Lino Melano, Luigi Guardigli created mosaic works for such artists as Marc Chagall, Fernand Léger, Georges Braque, Jean Bazaine, and Raoul Ubac. The artist also collaborated on the mosaic for the façade of the Musée national Fernand Léger in Biot (Alpes-Maritimes). In 1960 Luigi Guardigli executed a mosaic by the painter Georges Braque at the Colombe d'Or of Saint-Paul-de-Vence.

Starting from 1961 he had his own studio located in the artists' residence La Ruche at 2, passage de Dantzing in Paris. In the year 1962, collaborating with Braque, Guardigli created the famous long fish tank of the Fondation Maeght in St Paul de Vence. He continued to collaborate with many illustrious artists even in his later years. His last one was with Jean-Michel Folon. The latter years of his life were spent in an old people's rest home in Paris.

  Luigi Guardigli was a highly respected, successful painter. Even today many of his personal works in painting and mosaics are part of prominent private and public collections.
