The central thrust of Stcfanini’s work is a sustained development of the notion, rooted in a French Augustinianism. which wc might call '¡magisnT, the notion that we are created in the image of God and that our proper vocation is to confirm to our eternal exemplar. This is investigated through the investigation of Christian idealism, Christian spiritualism, and personalism. For Stefanini Christian idealism treats the self as created and not, as with Gentile, self-creating. His Christian spiritualism rejects existentialism and phenomenology as dividing the existential from the transcendent and lays stress on the self as existence which utters itself in the word that alludes to and depends on the absolute. Finally, in the investigation of personalism, Spirito's notion of‘imagism’ finds its mature form. The self cannot sustain itself without transcendence and realizes itself in relation to the transcendent.
