Sturzo's sociological investigations are historical and experimental and involve the historicist conception of sociology as the science of society with a ‘concrete dialectic", a notion which bears the influence of Augustine, Leibniz, Vico and Blondel. Man, bound to time and history, is at once free and conditioned, individual and social, not a fixed essence but a singular history and a projection of collective purposes, the institutionalization of which may lead to conflicts of interests betw'een social groups. The most powerful antidote to a conflict of interests is the involvement of the divine in human events, an involvement which motivates human progress, yielding an optimistic vision of mankind moving, albeit with occasional backward steps, to a greater socialization.
