("Frank Reade, Jr., and His New Steam Man" tells the thril...)
"Frank Reade, Jr., and His New Steam Man" tells the thrilling story of a young inventor who uses his latest invention to help prove a man's innocence. He teams up with the cavalry and justice-loving vigilantes to outsmart wily Indians and back-stabbing cowboys. This tale from the dime-novel era of American novels provides a window into American attitudes about race, class, and gender--and it's also just plain fun! At one time, Frank Reade, and his son, Frank Reade Jr., were two of the most beloved American characters. Today they can be seen as proto-steampunk.

(Around 1882, Senarens began writing new stories in the Fr...)
Around 1882, Senarens began writing new stories in the Frank Reade adventure story series begun by Harry Enton in 1868. Senarens introduced Frank Reade, Jr. as the new main character. Senarens added elements such as electricity, airships, and helicopters which resulted in him being called "the American Jules Verne." The stories were very successful, and by the 1890s Senarens was asked by publisher Frank Tousey to write a similar series featuring Jack Wright, the "Boy Inventor". Later in the decade, Tousey created the Frank Reade Library, a periodical devoted to "invention" stories, largely (or wholly) composed by Senarens using the pseudonym Noname. Mike Ashley calls him "the first prolific writer of science fiction". He would eventually write more than 300 dime novels. In 1917 Senarens became the editor of the Tousey detective story periodical, Mystery Magazine. Senarens also wrote under the names Kit Clyde, W. J. Earle, Police Captain Howard, Noname and Ned Sparling.

Frank Reade was the protagonist of a series of dime novels published primarily for boys. The first novel, Frank Reade and His Steam Man of the Plains, an imitation of Edward Ellis's The Steam Man of the Prairies (1868), was written by Harry Enton and serialized in the Frank Tousey juvenile magazine Boys of New York, February 28 through April 24, 1876. The four Frank Reade stories concerned adventures with the character's inventions, various robot-like mechanisms powered by steam.

Luis P. Senarens was born on April 24, 1863, in Brooklyn, New York, the United States.
Senarens studied law at St. John's College in Brooklyn.
Senarens began writing in 1881, at age sixteen. His first “Frank Reade, Jr." volume, Frank Reade, Jr. and His Steam Wonder, was published in 1884. Senarens, under the pseudonym “NONAME,” took over the writing of the serial from Harry Enton, who had devised the character of Frank, Sr., and shaped the basic pattern the adventures would fall into. Senarens introduced Frank, Jr., then later created Jack Wright, another boy inventor - the two young men would eventually share space in the same volume, racing each other around the world for a ten thousand dollar award.
While Senarens is recognized by critics as a progenitor of the science fiction genre, and an influence in the development of children’s science fiction, in particular, he was also no stylist - his writing was choppy and formulaic. In addition, his prose embodied the worst characteristics of the dime-novel tradition such as “sadism, ethnic rancor, factual ignorance, and an exploitation mentality,” according to a contributor to the Encyclopedia of Science Fiction. Nevertheless, Senarens wrote some two thousand stories, under at least twenty-seven pseudonyms.
In 1891 Senarens introduced the “Jack Wright” series, in which the title character’s specialty was inventing submarines. These novels were similar to the “Frank Reade, Jr.” stories, with titles like Jack Wright and His Electric Air Schooner; or, The Mystery of 0 Magic Mine and Jack Wright among the Demons of the Ocean with His Electric Sea-Fighter. Senarens tried several other series, one writing as Police Captain Howard, and kept up both the boy inventor serials until 1904, when dime-novel readership dried up.
Senarens also wrote two nonfiction books. How to Become a Naval Cadet and How to Become a West Point Military Cadet, before serving as the managing editor for the Tousey publications. He edited the weekly Motion Picture Stories and wrote film scenarios until his retirement in 1923.
Luis P. Senarens was known as “the American Jules Verne” for his use of fantastic scientific inventions in the two series of stories that characterize the bulk of his career. Overall, Senarens has written about 2,000 stories, which made him one of the most prolific writers in the early days of science fiction.
