Luis Enrique Politi is an Argentine neurobiologist and cell biology educator whose research focuses on retinal photoreceptors and the role of docosahexaenoic acid in retinal development. Born in Buenos Aires in 1950, he trained in Argentina and the United States and has taught at the National University of the South in Bahía Blanca since 1998.
Background
Luis Enrique Politi was born on December 12, 1950, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, the son of Horacio Daniel Politi and Zulema Hena Daniele. Buenos Aires, the national capital, was the country's largest urban center and a principal seat of its universities and research institutions.
His formative years and scientific training unfolded in the Argentine university system, and his later career connected the national research council with institutions in Bahía Blanca, Baltimore, and Boston.
Education
Politi received his doctorate in biology from the National University of the South (Universidad Nacional del Sur) in Bahía Blanca, Argentina, in 1990. The university is a public institution in Bahía Blanca, a port city in Buenos Aires Province, and it has served as the academic base for much of his subsequent work.
His doctoral training in Bahía Blanca preceded his postdoctoral work abroad and his later appointment as a professor there. The university's biology program, within which he later taught cell biology and neurobiology, formed the academic setting for his research on the retina.
Career
Politi began his research career in Bahía Blanca as a research fellow with the National Research Council of Argentina (CONICET) from 1980 to 1985. CONICET, created in 1958, is Argentina's national council for scientific and technical research and provides research posts and fellowships to scientists in universities and institutes.
From 1985 to 1989 he was a research associate at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. Johns Hopkins is a private research university founded in 1876, and its laboratories were a major center of American biomedical research during this period.
He returned to Argentina as a postdoctoral fellow with CONICET in Buenos Aires from 1989 to 1991. He then spent 1991 and 1992 as a postdoctoral fellow at Children's Hospital in Boston, the teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School, which was founded in 1869.
From 1992 he worked as a researcher with CONICET in Bahía Blanca. His research there is associated with the joint institute of CONICET and the National University of the South, the Instituto de Investigaciones Bioquímicas de Bahía Blanca (INIBIBB), where he is affiliated with the neurobiology department.
Since 1998 he has been a professor of cell biology and neurobiology at the National University of the South, combining university teaching with research in Bahía Blanca.
