Luis Felipe Vejarano is a Colombian ophthalmologist, cataract and refractive surgeon, educator, researcher, and inventor based in Popayán. He has led ophthalmic surgery at the Fundación Oftalmológica Vejarano, taught at the Universidad del Cauca, contributed to specialist publications, and developed patented pharmacological approaches to presbyopia treatment.
Background
Luis Felipe Vejarano was born in Popayán, in the department of Cauca, Colombia, on May 27, 1967. He continued the family’s ophthalmological tradition established by his father, Alberto Vejarano Cucalón, who founded the practice that later became the Fundación Oftalmológica Vejarano. His professional life has remained closely connected with Popayán and with the development of ophthalmic care and training in the region.
Education
Vejarano attended Colegio Champagnat and completed his medical education at the Universidad del Cauca, where he obtained the degree of Doctor of Medicine in 1990. He subsequently pursued specialist and subspecialist training in ophthalmology, anterior-segment surgery, corneal and refractive surgery, and external eye disease through programs associated with the Fundación Oftalmológica de Santander, the Universidad de Santander, the Universidad del Rosario, the Fundación Oftalmológica Nacional, and the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute. His training included an anterior-segment fellowship and helped establish the clinical focus that has characterized his later work in cataract, corneal, and refractive surgery.
Career
Vejarano began his professional association with the Fundación Oftalmológica Vejarano in 1997, working as an ophthalmic physician and subsequently assuming leadership of its surgical activities. He has practiced in the fields of cataract surgery, anterior-segment surgery, corneal disease, and refractive surgery, and has participated in the institution’s clinical training and fellowship activities. At the Universidad del Cauca, he has served as a faculty member in ophthalmology within the Department of Surgical Sciences. His clinical and research work has included microincision cataract surgery, phacoemulsification techniques, and pharmacological approaches to presbyopia. He developed the FOV Tears treatment concept, a binocular topical formulation intended to improve near vision without conventional monovision, and led clinical investigations of its effects. His work on an ophthalmic formulation for presbyopia resulted in patent protection in Colombia and several other jurisdictions. He has also been identified as the creator of a phaco-chop technique intended to reduce the risk of damage to the anterior lens capsule during cataract surgery.
Achievements
Developed FOV Tears, a binocular topical pharmacological approach intended to improve near vision in patients with presbyopia without conventional monovision.
Developed a phaco-chop cataract-surgery technique intended to reduce the risk of anterior lens-capsule damage, including in advanced cataracts.
Led clinical investigations of topical pharmacological treatment for presbyopia and published research on binocular near-vision improvement.
Obtained patent protection for an ophthalmic formulation and method for ameliorating presbyopia, including Colombian patent protection and a United States patent granted in 2019.

Views
His documented approach to presbyopia treatment emphasizes binocular, non-monovision care intended to improve near vision while preserving distance vision and stereopsis.
Membership
Vejarano has been associated with the Colombian Ophthalmology Society, the Latinamerican Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the International Society of Refractive Surgery, the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, and the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He has also been listed as a member of the Colombian Club Porsche. His professional affiliations reflect his continuing participation in ophthalmic surgery, cataract and refractive medicine, and international specialist networks.
