Luther Halsey Gulick, Jr. MD (1865–1918) was an American physical education instructor, international basketball official, and founder with his wife of the Camp Fire Girls, an international youth organization now known as Camp Fire.Gulick was born December 4, 1865 in Honolulu, Hawaiian Islands. His father was missionary physician Luther Halsey Gulick Sr. (1828–1891) and his mother was Louisa Lewis. His paternal grandfather Peter Johnson Gulick (1796–1877) was an even earlier missionary. He married Charlotte "Lottie" Emily Vetter of Hanover, New Hampshire in 1887. He studied at Oberlin Academy (a preparatory department of Oberlin College) 1880–1882 and 1883–1886 and at the Sargent Normal School for physical training (now the Boston University college of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences2) He graduated from the medical school of New York University in 1889.

Excerpt from Physical Education by Muscular Exercise The material in this little book grew up gradually through the exigencies of a lecture course on the Philosophy of Exercise. The subject-matter appeared in the "Y. M. C. A. Athletic League Letter" in 1899-1900. The range of topics discussed indicates my indebtedness to many persons. My first impulses toward working out my own thought on the subject came from my instructor, Dr. Dudley Allen Sargent, of Harvard University. The direction of my study was largely influenced for years by Dr. E. M. Hartwell, then of Johns Hopkins. To the inspiration of President G. Stanley Hall I owe the biologic point of view. To Dr. Wm. T. Harris I owe my first thought in regard to the relation of exercise to the vegetative processes. To Dr. T. M. Balliet, Superintendent of Schools, I also owe much. I do not wish to saddle these gentlemen with the responsibility for these ideas, for many of them are my own. If I have succeeded in my endeavor this book will be of service to those who wish a general view of the subject, whether for use in medicine or education. Luther Halsey Gulick was sent to the United States for his education and was graduated from the Medical College of the University of the City of New York in 1850.
Career
While a medical student Luther Halsey Gulick engaged in city mission work and was ordained to the Congregational ministry at the Broadway Tabernacle in October 1850.
In 1851 he sailed from Boston for Micronesia as a medical missionary under the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions. He did not reach the Caroline Islands until 1852, having stopped in Hawaii to act as chief organizer for the Hawaiian Mission Children’s Society.
He was stationed at Ponape and Ebon for some years, during which time he published A Sermon on the Foolishness of Preaching (1853) and a useful compilation of Notes on the Grammar of the Ponape Dialect (1858), reprinted in the Journal of the American Oriental Society, volume X (1872).
From 1863 to 1870 he was secretary of the Hawaiian Evangelical Association, with general superintendence of its missions.
In this capacity his economy of administration and ability as an organizer so impressed the American Board that he was chosen to inaugurate the Board's missions in the Roman Catholic Latin countries of southern Europe (1871).
In Spain (1871-73) he recommended establishing the line of mission posts in the northern part of the country that is still maintained by the Board.
In Italy (1873-74) he found conditions so unfavorable that upon his suggestion the Board withdrew its missions.
He then inspected the stations in Turkey and Bohemia and returned to the United States to aid the Board in arousing interest in missionary work.
In 1875 the American Bible Society sent Gulick to the Far East as its agent for the publishing and distribution of Bibles.
He edited the Chinese Recorder and Missionary Journal (1885-89) and founded the Medical Missionary Journal.
He died at Springfield, Massachusetts, at the age of sixty-two, after forty years of missionary service, the most distinguished member of a great missionary family.
